First Rayner Toric Injectable Lens implanted
Posted on 04/04/2003
The first Rayner toric injectable lens was implanted by Dr Gerd Auffarth, assisted by Dr Luis Vargas. The intraocular lens was custom-made for a cataract patient with a pre-existing 6 dioptres of corneal astigmatism.
Historical note:
The first IOLs with Toric optics were manufactured by Rayner for the English surgeon Peter Choyce in the 1950s . These lenses were then made of rigid PMMA and were introduced through large incisions.
One advantage of Rayner’s new injectable toric IOL is that it is made ofRayacryl® and it can be injected through an astigmatically-neutral incision of less than 3mm.
